Tuesday, May 17, 2005 Minutes

Attendees: Brenda Cagle, Catherine Dickert, Evelyn Krueger

Open the Meeting

bulletThe meeting was called to order at 7:20 p.m. by Brenda.

Minutes of Last Meeting

bulletThe minutes from the April meeting were not reviewed.

Old Business:

bulletThe week before the meeting, Catherine and Brenda drove around and checked to see which trees still needed gators.
bulletThe spring planting was held on Saturday, April 30th.  Everyone met at the village building, and David brought the water truck from the village garage. All volunteers enjoyed lunch at the Elmendorf Inn after the planting. Sandwiches and drinks were donated by Tiberio's IGA. The 4-H group helped by mulching the trees on Sunday, May 1st.
bulletEvelyn sent thank you notes to all those who helped by donating time and/or materials for our Arbor Day tree planting.  She also sent letters to the Poughkeepsie Journal, the Gazette Advertiser, and the Kingston Freeman naming those who donated to our Arbor Day activities and thanked those individuals  or businesses for their help.  We discussed the team approach that we used this Arbor Day, and agreed that it worked well.

New Business:

bulletEvelyn brought up the question of how to deal with homeowners who incorrectly prune street trees on their property.  We decided that this issue needs further discussion.  We also discussed ways that we night improve our communications with village employees and homeowners regarding the pruning and removal of trees.  We hope to better understand the village policies regarding pruning and removing trees so that we can give consistent answers to questions posed to us by village residents.
bulletThe National Arbor Day Foundation named the Village of Red Hook a Tree City USA again this year and conferred upon us a Growth Award for the third year in a row.  The Village Green will present this award to the Village Board at the June meeting.
bulletWe received a letter from a resident of the village who is interested in having a new street tree planted on her property.  We discussed ways in which we could identify homeowners in the village who would like new trees ahead of our twice yearly plantings.
bulletWe scheduled the first of several watering days for the summer.  We plan to water trees with gators several times this simmer, especially those at rental properties and businesses where they do not appear to get enough water.
bulletEvelyn discussed the Village Green finances.  We have raised $765.00 in total through our Bakeless Bake Sale this year.  We have $4,049.95 in the Village Green Development Fund.  We will receive $6,000 into our Village Green General Fund on June 1, 2005.

Motion to Close Meeting

bulletThe meeting was adjourned at 8:10 p.m.

Next Meeting

bulletOur next meeting will be held on Jun 21, 2005, at 7:00 p.m.  This will be a working meeting during which we will prune street trees.  We will meet at the village building and then break into teams to prune the 11 trees that were planted in 2003.  We will also prune a few additional trees that need pruning to improve growth.  We will issue press releases for this meeting and invite interested citizens to join us for our Solstice Pruning.
