Meetings
Tuesday,
January 25, 2005 Minutes
Attendees:
Brenda Cagle, Catherine Dickert, David Seymour, Evelyn Kruger, Linda
Keeling, Jan Schiff
Open the
Meeting
 | The
meeting was called to order at 7:04 p.m. by Brenda. Brenda led the
meeting. It was decided that the Village Green officers will take
turns leading future meetings. |
Minutes of Last Meeting
 | The minutes from the November 16th , 2004, meeting were
reviewed because they have not been posted to the website yet.
They will be posted with the January minutes and reviewed at the
February meeting. |
Old Business:
 | Brenda has been following up on the
maintenance work that was scheduled to take place this fall and winter.
One tree that was identified as hazardous by the state forester may be
on private property outside the village right-of-way. This tree
leans over East Market Street. The width of right-of-way for Route
199 is not known by the Village Green volunteers. David Seymour
will discuss this matter with the mayor to see what should be done about
the tree. As of the meeting date, it appeared that not all of the
Priority 2 trees had been pruned or removed by Integral. Village
employee, Dan Streib, recommended some trees for maintenance and the
resulting reprioritization of trees left some of the trees originally
scheduled for maintenance unattended. We spent $4950 for work on
Priority 1 trees. Green Space removed 3 trees, pruned 2 trees, and
there is one tree with works till pending. It is possible to plant
3 new trees in places where trees were removed. For Priority 2
trees, we spent $13,450. Integral removed 13 trees and pruned 16
trees. Of the 13 trees removed, there is one space to plant a new
tree. We still have $6627 worth of Priority 2 trees that need work
scheduled. This will include pruning 18 trees and removing 2
trees. We have $1800 of work to schedule on trees rated as
Priority 3. This will include removing 1 tree and pruning 7 trees. |
 | Our finances are in flux with some
late billing for spring trimming and deposits from the bakeless bake
sale. |
New Business:
 | Maple Lane Nursery will sell us bare
root trees at cost if we can place our order by the end of February.
A work meeting is scheduled for January 30th to determine which species
to plant, how many trees we will need, and where we will plant them.
We brainstormed on ideas for securing homeowner permission for planting
new trees. Brenda had some homeowners decline new trees when she
approached them this past fall. We also discussed some areas in
the village where new trees could be planted. We decided to focus
on East Market Street and Red Hook Estates for new street trees.
The volunteers present at the meeting expressed an interest in
increasing the planting of native trees. Schichtel's Nursery may
be able to provide us with native species of trees because they work
with NYS Department of Environmental Conservation in the planting of
native trees. |
 | We discussed ways to get more
publicity for the Village Green. We talked about ways to get
articles in local papers, especially for Arbor Day festivities. We
could also publicize our plantings, our work plan, and our tree success
rate. The Village of Red Hook was featured as an example of a
village that uses Palm Pilots for its street tree inventory in the NYS
Arborist Association meeting that was held recently at the Hudson Valley
Resort in Kerhonkson. We are also expecting a Growth Award as a
Tree City USA village this year. |
 | We assigned some new tasks to the
members present at the meeting. Catherine will e-mail meeting
announcements to the list of members. Evelyn will update the
member list with current contact information. David will contact
local papers prior to our events. |
 | We discussed possible ways to get
students involved in our Arbor Day and planting activities. We
talked about designing a program for schools that could be taught by an
arborist. |
Motion to Close Meeting
 | The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m. |
Next Meeting
 | Our next meeting will be held on
Tuesday, February 15th, at 7:00 p.m. in the village hall. |
